Follow up from last night

The song, “Ultraviolet (Light My Way)” is the only “U2 sounding” song on 1991’s “Achtung Baby”. I’ve always liked it; but after seeing them play it in Chicago 2 weeks ago, I’ve fallen in love all over again.

It’s about a guy who does not always want to do the right thing:

“Sometimes I feel like I don’t know
Sometimes I feel like checking out.
I wanna get it wrong
Can’t always be strong
And love, it won’t be long.”

It’s about a Savior who loves:

“Oh, sugar, don’t you cry.
Oh, child, wipe the tears from your eyes.
You know I need you to be strong
And the day it is dark, as the night is long.”

It’s about knowing what’s been done for you:

“Feel like trash, you make me feel clean.”

It’s about being in the dark, but not being seen by VISIBLE light (Ultraviolet…get it?):

“I’m in the black, can’t see or be seen.”

It’s about crying out, and asking for guidance:

“Baby, baby, baby, light my way.
Alright now, baby, baby, baby, light my way.”

It’s about seeking…and finding.

“You bury your treasure where it can’t be found
But your love is a secret that’s been passed around.”

It’s about the tension that happens while waiting for the finding to happen:

“There is a silence that comes to a house
Where no-one can sleep.
I guess it’s the price of love; I know it’s not cheap.”

It’s about the begging and pleading when you’re tired of waiting:

“Oh, come on, baby, baby, baby, light my way.
Oh, come on, baby, baby, baby, light my way
(Ultraviolet) (Ultraviolet) (Ultraviolet)
Baby, baby, baby, light my way.”

It’s about being so far gone that you feel nothing can save you:

“I remember when we could sleep on stones.”

It’s about the intimacy that takes place when the finding happens:

“Now we lie together in whispers and moans.”

It’s about knowing your true status absent God:

“When I was all messed up…” (In the live video posted last night, Bono is absolutely mournful at this part in the song. I know…he uses a different word for “messed”.)

It’s about knowing that love is always there just beneath the surface and you’re not abandoned:

“…and I heard opera in my head.
Your love was a light bulb hanging over my bed.”

It’s a praise.

“Baby, baby, baby, light my way.
Oh, come on, baby, baby, baby, light my way.
(Ultraviolet) (Ultraviolet) (Ultraviolet)
Baby, baby, baby,
light my way”

  1. I know that the Godly part is there, but how much of "oh baby, baby, baby light my way" about trying to find his inner child that seems to be lost. "Unless you are like one of these…" He is a guy that wants to do wrong and the inner child is crying about it. I think that is more of it. There is this piece that we have and we loose it and we fight to get is back.
